 Bariis Somali Fuduud - How to Make Easy Somali Rice



Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp cooking oil
  • 1/4 of an onion
  • 1 tbsp of xawaji (Somali Spice Mix - recipe coming soon)
  • 2 chicken stock cubes
  • 2 cups rice of choice (we used Basmati)
  • 4 cups water
  • Food colorings

Instructions

  • Soak 2 cups of rice in water for 20 min
  • Meanwhile boil water in a kettle
  • Place 2 chicken stock cubes in a cup and pour some of the boiling water on it
  • Chop up onions in small pieces
  • Rinse the water out of the rice 
  • Take a pot, put stove on medium, then place cooking oil in it
  • When oil is heated, add in chopped onions
  • Once onions are translucent, add in the tbsp of xawaji
  • Add the drained rice into the pot and mix around to lightly toast
  • Add in the one cup of chicken stock cubes mixed in hot water
  • Then add in the additional 3 cups of boiling water from the kettle to just cover the rice completely 
  • Rice is ready when the water is finished
  • Once ready, cover the pot with a piece of aluminum foil, and transfer to the oven for 5 to 10 min at 350 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Remove from oven, then add in the food colorings of your choice.
  • Enjoy!

How to Make Xawaji / Xawaash (Somali Spice Mix)

 How to Make Xawaji / Xawaash (Somali Spice Mix) Ingredients: 1 cup cumin  1 tbsp of pickling spices  3 to 4 cinnamon sticks, roughly broken  1 tsp grounded cardamom  2 tbsp turmeric Instructions: Place a pan on medium heat and then add cumin, pickling spices, 3 to 4 cinnamon sticks and stir around Then add in grounded cardamom and turmeric and continue to stir (This process should be 5-10 minutes, be careful not to burn it) Once all the ingredients are well incorporated and hot, place into a grinder/food processor and finely ground That's it! Easiest Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe

 Easiest Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe Ingre dients: 2 1/2 cups flour 1/3 cup sugar 1 tbsp yeast 1 cups of water Pizza sauce Pizza blend cheese Mozzarella cheese Instructions: In a bowl, add in flour, sugar, and yeast and mix well. Then add in the water and mix or knead until a dough forms. Cover the dough and allow to rise until it doubles in size, approximately 1 hour. Flour you working area. Cut dough into two pieces and roll out dough. Oil/grease your pizza pan and place the pizza dough on it. Place pizza dough into oven for 2-3 minutes or until it starts to rise slightly. Then remove pizza dough from oven and put your sauce of choice (we used red pizza sauce). Then place your cheese (mozzarella and pizza blend is what we used) & toppings of yout choice.
